The third Monday of January every year serves as the MLK Day of Service, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. People throughout the country participate by volunteering their time to benefit a variety of organizations in a number of ways. In 2021, virtual volunteering opportunities are expected to be the norm rather than the exception, allowing people to give back to their communities while staying safely at home in their apartment.
Some people prefer to work with nonprofits within their own communities, while others look to join national organizations working on a larger scale. There are volunteer opportunities in the Columbus area and throughout Ohio, and we’ve got some tips on how to get involved!
Find Volunteer Opportunities
If you’re new to volunteering or looking for an organization to work with, VolunteerMatch provides a database of nonprofit organizations looking for volunteers. The database allows you to sort and filter by location, focus of the organization, and the type of help they’re looking for.
Whether your passion is education, animals, food insecurity, the environment, or something else, VolunteerMatch helps you find an organization that’s the right fit for your interest, skills, and availability.
Help Recruit Others
One way to really make an impact when volunteering is to invite others to do the same. Many opportunities are team-based or can benefit from extra sets of hands (either in-person or virtually), and can be a great way to get your friends or family involved in a cause near to your heart. See if you can recruit a few others to join you this year for the MLK Day of Service.
Continue the Work Year-Round
The third Monday in January is an ideal time to start virtually volunteering, but nonprofits are in need of help throughout the year. Once you begin working with an organization, find out what you can do on an ongoing basis that fits into your schedule and will benefit your community. Most nonprofits offer a number of ways to help support them all year long.
