Nearest town/city: Newport, KY/Cincinnati, OH

Highlights: The name implies the best part: plenty of marine life! There are incredible sea creatures for you to admire at every turn, including penguins, sharks, eels, frogs, and more. You can also enjoy special themed exhibits and unique viewing experiences like the stingray viewing tunnel. The aquarium offers some awesome hands-on activities, too. If you’re worried about driving all that way for the aquarium alone, you can rest easy. The Newport Aquarium is part of Newport on the Levee. This is a multi-level retail, entertainment, and dining development that has plenty for you to explore and enjoy. 

#3: National Museum of the United States Air Force

Approximate drive time: about 1 hour, 15 minutes

Nearest town/city: Dayton, OH

Highlights: You may be thinking that you’d get through a museum pretty quickly and not need a whole road trip, but this is the largest military aviation museum in the world! There are over 19 acres of indoor exhibit space where you can see innovations in aviation over the decades. There are themed galleries in case you have a special interest in something like World War II or presidents. And one of the best parts? Admission is always free! You can also check out extras like flight simulators, a cafe, and the museum store. You can even extend your visit to the area by checking out nearby attractions in Dayton.

#4: Hocking Hills State Park

Approximate drive time: 1 hour

Nearest town/city: Logan, OH

Highlights: This is another great destination for anyone who loves the outdoors. This park is another one known for its incredible water features, including waterfalls and caves carved out of the rock over time. There’s a gorge, cliffs, creeks, and even a natural rock bridge. If you’re not too keen on hiking all day long, you find plenty to do nearby. Guided hunting and fishing are permitted, and there are some art and antique malls to explore. You may even decide a road trip isn’t quite enough time to enjoy everything, so you can opt to go camping or rent an incredible treehouse cabin and really take your time taking in all the park has to offer.
