How to Reorganize Your Kitchen

Getting Your Kitchen in Order

Many people would have to confess that their kitchen may not be the most organized part of their living space. After all, everything is conveniently sealed in drawers or cabinets, which makes it all too easy to stuff and hide things we plan to deal with later (if we remember we put them there). Sometimes you’re lucky enough to live somewhere with plenty of storage space, like the spacious floor plans at Muirwood Village. Our Reynoldsburg apartments include modern kitchens plus breakfast bars for some extra room. But no matter where you live, it’s always a good idea to keep things organized and functional in the kitchen, so here are some tips to get things in order and (hopefully) keep them that way!

Step 1: Make a Mess

This might sound counterintuitive, but the only way to get things organized is to clear everything out first. You’ll have to make a bit of a mess and get everything out of the cabinets, drawers, pantry, etc. You can put them on the counter or a nearby table. As you pull items out, it’s a good idea to have a trash can or at least a garbage bag nearby. The odds are very high you’ll find something hiding in a corner somewhere that you don’t really need or that may be past its expiration date. After everything is out, this is also a great opportunity to clean out your cabinets and drawers so all your things go back into tidy cabinets, drawers, and shelves.

Step 2: Create Categories

You have everything out in the open, so now is a good time to create some common and/or functional categories for your kitchen items. If you’re not into cooking all that much, then you will want to focus on general categories, like:

     Seasonings

     Pots/pans

     Small appliances

     Cooking utensils

     Silverware

If you’re a fan of cooking, then you may want to add categories for the things you like to cook most, like:

Baking items (cookie sheets, muffin tins, etc.)

Stand mixer and attachments, food processor, and/or other large appliances

Coffee makers, mugs, beans, French press

Dry goods regularly used (flour, sugar, pasta, beans, etc.)

Step 3: Find the Right Tools

Let’s be honest, a lot of kitchen disorganization comes from shoving things into storage areas where they don’t quite fit. One of the best ways to avoid this common misstep is to find tools to help you contain the jumble. Some of the top tools to try are:

An adjustable organizer for your pans, lids, etc.

Clear, airtight containers for general storage (avoids clumsy piles of bags)

An adjustable cabinet shelf to utilize all the vertical space you have

Magnetic holders, shelving, etc., like this multi-use magnetic kitchen organizer

Step 4: Check Your Work

There’s only one way to be sure your kitchen organization works for you. You have to spend time in your kitchen using the new system. Give it two weeks to a month so you can get used to the new layout. After that, assess what’s working for you and what isn’t. You may find that you put something too low or too high or that something got disorganized too quickly and maybe you need to find another organizing tool. Whatever the case may be, don’t give up! You can always start at the top and try again, or even make this an annual thing as your needs change.
